The first locality to allow changing preferences after the grade 10 exam

Nghe An is the first locality in the country to allow candidates to change their preferences after taking the grade 10 entrance exam in order to have the highest chance of being admitted.

According to the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An, the period for changing preferences is from June 7th to 5:00 PM on June 10th, immediately after the public grade 10 entrance exam in Nghe An concludes (June 6th).

Mr. Dao Cong Loi, Deputy Director of the Department, stated that in previous years, 9th-grade students would prepare their application documents and register their preferences before the exam. They usually relied solely on their academic abilities when making their choices, resulting in many students not getting into their desired schools and missing out on suitable learning opportunities.

Therefore, starting from this academic year, the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An decided to allow candidates to change their preferences after completing the exam. "At this point, students are aware of the quality of their work and can consult with teachers and seek opinions from parents to choose a suitable school, increasing their chances of being admitted," said Mr. Loi.

Across the country, Nghe An is the only province allowing public grade 10 candidates to change their preferences after the exam. Ho Chi Minh City also permits preference changes, but it must be done before the exam, while in Ha Noi, candidates are only allowed to register their preferences once.

This year, Nghe An is also introducing for the first time the online registration, document submission, viewing of exam scores, and admission results for grade 10 through an online platform.

Candidates who are granted direct admission due to their international language certificates will not have to participate in the grade 10 entrance exam; they only need to be recognized as completing secondary education. This is also a new development because in previous years, these candidates had to be accepted into any public high school (except for the IELTS admission class at Phan Boi Chau specialized high school).

The public grade 10 exam in Nghệ An for the 2023-2024 academic year will take place on June 5th-6th at 72 exam centers, covering the subjects of Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Languages. The province has approximately 39,000 candidates registered for the exam, while the admission quota is around 32,000.
