For many years, Vietnamese students usually complete the High school education before planning for higher education in the U.S. However, during recent years, studying abroad in the U.S. during High school years is becoming more popular for parents and students alike, because of these undeniable results:
1. Better English mastery
The best way to learn a language is to live fully immersed with such language’s native speakers. Therefore, studying abroad early on will help students to become better exposed to the native English spoken environment, resulting in better language mastery for the students.
For students studying abroad starting from grade 10, of course there might be certain difficulties at first. However, due to the nature of the grade 10 curriculum being simpler than the academic courses of higher education, students will have more time to practice English from language class provided by the school or participate in the TOEFL/SAT preparation course for University.
2. Better adaption in foreign environment
Many researches have concluded that human capability of adaption is higher during younger ages. Most of the students who studied abroad during High school years have adapted well with the new teaching methodology, way of living, culture and daily activities of the foreign country.
By study abroad since grade 10, students will live with a Host Family – a native U.S. family due to the reason that the student is considered underage. This helps the students to master their English because the host parents are always willing to correct any mistakes the students might make and enhance the English competency while helping the students to adapt to the new environment.
Moreover, studying abroad since grade 10 will help student to become independent and matured, making them more confident before starting University or seeking employment after graduated.
3. Confident in decision making
The United States has always been famous for its highly developed education. Therefore, career guidance for student is focused early on. Many career guidance courses are developed during High school and almost all High school has their own team of councilors ready to provide guidance base on each student’s capabilities and hobbies. This results in clear future planning and better decision making. Actual surveys also point out the correlation between successful future careers with clear planning and positioning.
4. Solid foundation for U.S. scholarship admission
Study abroad in the U.S. during High school years will result in a solid foundation for students to become familiar with independent thought and Western critical thinking methodology. This will allow students to easily achieve high score in University admission test such as SAT, ACT and ensure the opportunity to be admitted at privilege universities like MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Yale,… Furthermore, U.S High schools also provide many activities such as extra-curricular and community activities for students to gain more score during the application process for these universities.
Above are the advantages of study abroad during High school year. However, study abroad early on still has its disadvantages such as cultural shock, problems from lack of life skills and being affected by the surrounding environment… Therefore, parents should fully prepare the students mentally before studying abroad. The advice from EduPath for students is “be active”, seeking help when facing difficulty and participate in as many extra-curricular activities as possible. The U.S has a very open culture, as students become more active, they will more likely to receive help when having problem, and the participation in activities such as clubs will help the students better adapt to the new environment.
Should parents still have any worry concerning the adaption capability of their children to the new environment in the U.S., Edupath is ready to provide our assistance.
Edupath is currently in partnership with over 5.000 High schools, universities, colleges, English institutions and Non-governmental organization across the U.S concerning education.
