TESOL MASTER Seminar - giving wings to young people's English dreams

On August 10, the online seminar "TESOL Master - Industry Stories, Career Stories" took place. The event attracted nearly 400 students and newly graduated teachers and the participation of 3 speakers who are experts in the field of TESOL, including: Dr. Tran The Phi - Head of the Faculty of Foreign Languages,  Saigon University; Dr. Nguyen Thi Nhu Diep - Head of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Vietnam Aviation Academy and MSc. Calum Leatham - lecturer of the Faculty of English, Diplomatic Academy helped the seminar to be exciting, open and successful.

The practical exchanges and sharing from the 3 speakers, along with the students present at the online discussion, showed the dedication of leading experts in the field of TESOL and the interest of the audience in practical stories about the industry - profession, and the important meanings of the TESOL certificate in becoming an excellent English teacher.

When asked about the biggest challenges in teaching foreign languages, from his profound experience in practical training and teaching for many years, Dr. Tran The Phi said that inspiring and motivating students in foreign languages ​​can be considered the biggest challenge and difficulty. Therefore, to inspire learners, each teacher and lecturer must constantly research and explore new and creative learning methods to stimulate learners' interest.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Nhu Diep gave practical and profound perspectives on the importance of soft skills such as: communication skills, teamwork, problem solving skills, project management, note taking skills... for a TESOL teacher.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Nhu Diep, the essential skill groups that students should practice to adapt, work and develop in an international environment include: skills to understand diverse cultures, creativity, critical thinking, the ability to cope with changes, stress management, etc. In addition to possessing a TESOL certificate, these important soft skills, if practiced and developed, will become a great advantage for students after graduating and entering different working environments.

As a lecturer at the Diplomatic Academy, MSc. Calum Leatham attended the discussion and shared the difficulties he encountered in the early days of teaching Vietnamese students. MSc. Calum said that teaching is a challenging job. When he first moved to Vietnam, it took him a while to understand the psychology and needs of Vietnamese students. However, this was an important premise that helped MSc. Calum create new and effective teaching methods. At the end of the discussion, MSc. Calum Leatham also emphasized the important role of TESOL certification in English teaching today.

The experts' sharing gave students a comprehensive view of the TESOL teaching profession. In addition to imparting professional knowledge, they also emphasized the importance of TESOL certification and the need to continuously learn, update new knowledge and develop soft skills. The speakers also shared practical experiences in the teaching process, helping students visualize more clearly the work of an English teacher, in order to have appropriate preparation for their future career journey.
