Distinguishing 6 types of English certificates - Which exam should you choose?

Distinguishing 6 types of English certificates - Which exam should you choose?

1. IELTS

What is IELTS?
It stands for International English Language Testing System. IELTS is a system of tests on English proficiency across all four skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

There are two forms: Academic (academic) for undergraduate or postgraduate students and General training module (general training) for working people or for immigration purposes.

What is the IELTS test for?

  • This is a mandatory requirement for studying abroad and migrating to many countries.
  • Applying for scholarships to study abroad and scholarships to international schools in Vietnam. For example: One of the conditions for applying for a full scholarship to RMIT University Vietnam is IELTS (Academic) 6.5 or higher (no skill below 6.0)
  • Exemption from the National High School Exam in English (condition: minimum IELTS 4.0)
  • ELTS is also a certificate certifying English proficiency that many universities apply as output standards for students. For example, with Ho Chi Minh City Banking University, it is 6.5.

You can imagine IELTS as a ruler to measure your English level. And this ruler is the most popular ruler in many countries.

Note

  • In the test, there will be many types of English accents from places such as: UK, US, Australia to avoid language discrimination. When practicing listening, pay attention to this to practice listening to native speakers in many countries.
  • Scores will be awarded for each sub-skill (listening, reading, writing, speaking). The scale ranges from 1 (no use) to 9 (use fluently).
  • The IELTS test results will only be valid for 2 years.

2. TOEIC

What is TOEIC?
It stands for Test of English for International Communication. TOEIC is a test to assess the English proficiency of people who use English as a foreign language (not their mother tongue), especially those who want to use English in an international communication and working environment.

The results of the TOEIC test reflect the level of proficiency in communicating in English in activities such as business, trade, tourism, etc.

Why should you take the TOEIC test?

TOEIC has emerged as a more popular standard for assessing English proficiency of workers.

Many universities and colleges have included TOEIC in their curriculum and selected the TOEIC test to monitor students' progress in English learning by semester, school year or use it as an English output standard for graduates.

Note
TOEIC results are only valid for 02 years and are recognized in many countries including Vietnam.

  • You need a TOEFL iBT certificate in the following cases:
  • Studying undergraduate and graduate programs in Vietnam and abroad, requiring the use of English.
  • Applying for scholarships, cultural exchange programs.
  • Test/assess your English proficiency.

TOEFL vs IELTS?

  • TOEFL and IELTS are the two most popular English proficiency tests. Both tests all four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, but the tests differ in format and scoring.
  • IELTS assesses English proficiency while TOEFL tests American English proficiency.
  • TOEFL has more multiple-choice questions while IELTS candidates listen/read for information and fill in the answers.

Note

  • TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years.
  • You can take the test multiple times, each time no less than 12 days apart.

4. SAT

Along with other requirements such as candidate profile, academic ability and achievements, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, interviews, etc., most foreign students who want to study at a university or college in the US must demonstrate their academic ability through the SAT exam.

What is the SAT?
If TOEFL is a "powerful" test to assess the English ability of international students, the standardized SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) is an important "parameter" for American universities to assess the academic ability of local students.

Students who wish to study abroad in the US, in addition to paying attention to obtaining certificates such as IELTS or TOEFL, must also invest time to practice for the SAT exam.

The SAT is valid for 5 years.

Types of Tests
There are 2 types of tests:
  • The most popular is the SAT Reasoning Test, also known as SAT 1, with 3 sections (Reading, Writing - Language, Math) with a total absolute score of 1600.
  • In addition, there is the SAT Subject Test, also known as SAT 2, dedicated to specific subjects such as Math, Chemistry, Biology, Literature (SAT II Literature) ...

5. GMAT

Surely many of you will know IELTS or TOEFL more than the name GMAT. But if you are planning to get an MBA at a prestigious university in the United States or are passionate about the business field, then you should know about GMAT right now.

What is GMAT?

GMAT is an entrance exam for Master of Management programs.

If you plan to study at business schools, the GMAT certificate is almost mandatory in your application. In the 3.5-hour computer-based test, through 78 multiple-choice questions and 2 analytical essays, you will be tested on analytical writing skills, quantitative skills, and language communication skills (reading comprehension, correcting errors in sentences, and critical reasoning).

Why do you need to take the GMAT?
  • GMAT scores are the entrance criteria for top MBA and Master programs at more than 2,500 business schools in the US, Europe and other countries
  • One of the important factors for scholarship consideration at prestigious schools
  • Helps to train yourself, improve reading, writing and thinking and reasoning skills

What is the required GMAT score?

The minimum GMAT score that schools usually require is 600/800. The more "famous" the school, the higher the GMAT score required (eg Harvard, Columbia or Chicago GSB often require 730 GMAT points or more).

Experience of previous candidates
“Spend about 2 days to get acquainted and search for documents on the website www.mba.com to see what the overall structure of the GMAT is. Then, depending on your ability, divide the time to review each theoretical content and exercises in a reasonable way” – Hong May (studied at the University of Missouri).

“Time management is essential in the GMAT review process, creating a time tracking table for each section. The advantage of Asians is their strong grasp of math, so improve your math skills to achieve the highest score in this section. In addition, this is not an academic English test but also has a lot of practical knowledge, so organize a group review to exchange experiences and think together" - Tram Le

"In my opinion, the GMAT learning method is essentially still hard work to make up for intelligence. As long as you have a good English foundation, spend time learning basic knowledge and study/do the test correctly, you will one day achieve results. So if you study for a long time but still cannot get a high score, it can only be (1) because your English is still weak, (2) because you do not grasp the basics or (3) because you study the wrong method. I do not think there is anyone who cannot-study-for-the-GMAT." - Linh Thuy

Note
  • This test measures your ability to use knowledge through problem solving and creative thinking rather than the amount of knowledge you have.
  • The current exam fee is approximately $250.
  • GMAT scores are valid for 5 years.

6. GRE

What is GRE?

GRE stands for Graduate Record Examination.

The test is required for students who intend to apply to undergraduate and graduate programs in social studies, engineering studies, and many other fields.

GRE includes 2 forms: GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test. In which, the structure of the GRE General test includes 3 basic parts: language, quantitative and analytical writing.

Normally, the test does not focus on a specific problem but focuses on the skills necessary for students. Meanwhile, the structure of the GRE Subject Test will focus on a specific field such as Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, English Literature, Physics, Psychology.

Scoring scale of the sections
  • Math section: score from 200-800, gap between adjacent scores is 10
  • Language section: score from 200-800, gap between adjacent scores is 10
  • Writing section: score from 0-6, gap between adjacent scores is 0.5

GRE is more vocabulary-oriented while GMAT is more grammar & reasoning-oriented.
