The difference between conversational English and academic English

The difference between conversational English and academic English

1. Difference in purpose

Communicative English is an everyday language, aimed at talking and exchanging information with people around. Meanwhile, academic English is more formal, requires higher precision and is used in educational environments, seminars, etc.

Although there are many differences in the purpose of use, communicative English and academic English cannot be separated from each other. Communicative English is the premise for academic English and academic English complements communicative English, making it richer. Like a child, knowing how to listen and speak before going to school will create conditions for learning to read and write more easily. On the contrary, studying at school helps children grasp a lot of information and from there, helps children's daily communication become more fluent and diverse.

2. Differences in usage context

In addition to being used for daily communication about life and work, English communication is also expressed in written form such as letters, phone messages, etc.

Academic English is different! This form often appears in scientific reports, learning documents, administrative documents, etc., requiring neatness, politeness and formality in both speaking and writing.

3. Differences in expression

The way of expressing yourself in conversational and academic English is different in terms of vocabulary and grammar. With conversational English, you only need to use familiar vocabulary, you are allowed to use slang words, abbreviations and do not need to be 100% grammatically correct.

On the contrary, with academic English, you are not allowed to use slang words and the grammar must be very careful. In addition, the vocabulary of academic English is also more complex and specialized.

For example:

– Conversational English:

A: I’m thinking of checking out a restaurant in the neighborhood. Do you have any suggestion?

B: Oh, I know that great little place. It’s just a hole in the wall, but it does the most amazing sandwiches. We gotta give it a try!

– Academic English:

Every year, there are changes in climate in different parts of the world. Some of these changes are due to natural causes. However, some climatic changes are caused by air pollution, such as burning oil and coal in industry and transportation.

4. Differences in learning styles

For English communication, learners only need to pay attention to listening and speaking skills. However, to improve vocabulary and speak more fluently, you should still spend time reading simple articles.

On the contrary, learning academic English is quite difficult and is often started when you are at a certain level of communication. That is because academic English serves education at school and professional work, it requires learners to have the ability to present, write essays, reports, ... so it is necessary to invest a lot of effort and time to practice. In addition to listening and speaking skills, academic English is very important in reading and writing skills.

Hopefully with the differences between English communication and academic English above, you can distinguish and choose for yourself the type of English that best suits your purpose. No matter what English it is, it starts with the basics such as improving vocabulary, practicing pronunciation, practicing listening, practicing reading, etc. Good luck!
